So you are one of the lucky ducks who got your hands on a Wii system. Welcome to a whole
new dimension in gaming! But getting hold of the console itself is just a start. You can have
fun dressing up your Wii with state-of-the-art accessories. But, great accessories are not just
for your game systems! There is a whole line of Nintendo apparel available for you to advertise
your love of gaming. If you are searching for a great gift for a loved one who is into Nintendo
games, look no further.
I had a tough time at first trying to sort through the needed items vs. the recommended items.
Then there are items that are just plain fun. (And after all, isn't that what it's all about?) Here
are some of the accessories you can get for your Nintendo Wii -- and for you or someone you
care about:
1. Silicone skins for your Wiimote and Nunchuk controllers are highly recommended. They are
also made for the classic controller (the type with the cord which is more like the controllers
you are used to seeing). They improve the grip, keep the controllers clean, and help prevent
damage from scratches, dents, and drops. Plus, they look cool and come in a wide variety of
colors, including solids, two-toned, and patterns...even some that glow in the dark! My tie-dye
skin glows in the dark, and I didn't realize this until I got home and noticed my bag was glowing! They are tailor-made for the Wii controllers, so only the buttons and sensors are
exposed. The skins do come in a hard snap-on variety which are a bit easier to remove, but I have not actually seen these in real life. In addition to skins for controllers, there are skins
that you can get for the actual game console itself.
2. Use the wrist strap. It will keep your wiimote from flying across the room. They come with
the Wiimote but they also come in different colors with some of the skin sets. For only $3 you
can upgrade to a color leather wrist strap.
3. The nunchuk controller does not come with the Wii system, but it is highly recommended for
the 2-handed use that we have all gotten used to. It plugs right into your Wiimote. Some will
even go so far as to advise against playing without the nunchuk controller and that it should
come with the system.
4. Rechargeable batteries -- the Wiimote is battery-operated by AA's. They can eat up your
batteries quickly, so I would suggest you invest a few extra dollars in some rechargeable
batteries and a unit for recharging. It just plugs right into a regular outlet. Buy a spare set so
one set can be charging while you play with a fresh set. That would be very disappointing if
you had to set your game aside because of low batteries.
5. The recharger docking station by Nyko is a unit that charges two Wiimotes at the same
time. The battery unit at the back is rubberized for better grip and has a slot to make contact
with the charger unit. The downside to this is that you cannot charge your Wiimotes with the
skins on. I like the skins, as they keep the controllers clean. So, personally, we will be using
the removable rechargeable AA batteries for that very reason. But, many players like the idea of
being able to just plug the Wiimotes back into the charger stand when play is done -- no
replacing batteries, and if enough time has passed you have fully charged Wiimotes next time
you are ready to play again.
6. The Nyko Wireless Sensor bar improves reception between your Wiimote and your console.
This is recommended for use if you will be playing in a large room and will have your controllers
farther than 10 feet from the console, such as you might have if you plan to play on a large
screen television.
7. Wireless network adapters, such as the USB wireless device for the Wii system (resembles a
USB flash drive and plugs into any USB port) and the LAN adapter, are only necessary if you
are not using either a wireless modem or router. If your house is set up for wireless internet
access, you are good to go. The Nintendo Wii game system is set up to connect to your Wi-Fi.
8. There are a multitude of controller devices for use with certain games. There are steering
wheels for racing games, a tennis racket, golf club, baseball bat, an "archery" type device for
Link's crossbow, a gun, and the other day on You Tube I noticed a sword and shield set that
attach to your Wiimote! You can get into some serious hard-core gaming with all these
gadgets.
9. You can get jewelry and clothing to show off your love of the game. My personal favorite is a
very, very soft fine cotton, navy blue T-shirt that says "Mario Bros. Plumbing Company" and has
Mario and Luigi on the front. The tri-force logo from the Zelda games is featured on both a
necklace and several shirts. The necklace is actually quite nice looking. My girls saw it on my
site and now they want it badly. These are teenage girls, mind you, but it is definitely unisex
jewelry. You can also find a hilarious belt buckle that looks like the old original NES controller
and boxer shorts that feature Good and Evil from the Mario games. There are Guitar Hero shirts
now as well. Wallets, underwear, pajamas, hats, shirts, jewelry -- so many choices!
I am sure this list will continue to grow with the evolution of the Nintendo Wii gaming system.
From controller skins to shirts to jewelry, the avid Nintendo enthusiast can find cool stuff to
satisfy his/her craving for fun.
