Want to take some solar power with you? Don't think you'll be packing that solar panel that was designed for your roof. Aluminum frame, glass face, about 5-10 lbs? Forget it.
When it comes to portable power for wilderness expeditions, solar panels are a great idea. But you can forget about carrying the kind of solar panel you find on roofs. We're talking about thin film solar panels. The kind that are laminated onto nylon canvas, and flexible vinyl materials.
These flexible and rollable solar panels offer a number of advantages over the 'rigid' type.
Much lighter in weight
Much smaller when folded for carrying
Usually more sensitive in partial shade & low light conditions
Less energy & waste used in their manufacturing process
Among the thin film solar charger panels, there are a few different chemistries, including CIGS & amorphous silicon. There are even layering techniques whereby the panel is able to capture a broader spectrum of light energy. Most of these technologies are very close to each other in terms of efficiency. They all convert roughly the same amount of daylight into useable electricity. The most important factor for outdoor wilderness expeditions is usually the form factor. How small & light can the panel be while producing the power I need & being tough enough.
When you look for a lightweight folding or rollable panel, consider the connections that run through the folds, or 'hinges' of the panel. The best panels will offer redundant connections, and durable ribbon cable connections for long life during all the opening & closing of the panel over the years. You will also want to look for water resistant connections, cell faces that are easy to keep clean, and a durable nylon canvas or vinyl backing material that can take a fair amount of abuse. Being able to mount the panels in a variety of ways to tents, packs, & trees is also useful, so look for corner grommets & physical dimensions that meet your needs.
PowerFilm foldable panels are extremely popular for hiking & backpacking, while the PowerFilm foldables are ideal for marine applications like kayaking, canoeing, & boating. The rollable panels by PowerFilm offer the best water resistance, and all PowerFIlm panels come with outstanding gasketed connectors.
Also very popular are the CIGS panels offered by Brunton. These are tough, light, and are designed for simplified plug & play with Brunton (and other) battery packs for storing the solar energy. Wagan makes a folding panel made from segments of rigid panel material. Very tough, and very affordable. They are heavier, but an excellent way to get into the technology.
