A bulk wire is an industrial product that is good not only for the professional but for the do-it-yourselfer. It is used in numerous applications and is available in different lengths and sizes. Often, manufacturers offer cut-to-length varieties while some are also given in pre-packaged lengths ranging from 25 ft to 100 ft. Ordering depends upon the client's actual needs.

Power cord

A power cord - also known as the line cord or mains cable - is one of the most common applications for bulk wires. It is a cord that connects any electrical appliance to electrical power sources or distribution circuits temporarily. The distribution is made possible either by a main wall socket or an extension cord.

There are different line voltages for a power cable. With the use of a power plug and the so-called single-phase alternating current power source, 100 to 240 volts of electricity are produced. Furthermore, the power cable may be permanently attached or detached from the main appliance. One example of which is a lamp cord described as a lightweight two-wire cord system and used for table or floor lamps.

Speaker wire

This is a type of bulk wire used to connect loudspeakers to audio amplifiers. Traditionally, the designs of a speaker wire included a pair of electrical power wires for the loudspeaker. Nowadays, modern speakers have two electrical conductors in their wiring systems. Each of these conductors is insulated by a plastic and although the wires seem to be identical, they are marked for easy polarity identification.

Coaxial cable

Also termed as coax, a coaxial cable is classified under electrical cables. It consists of inner conductors with an internal insulating layer made out of a flexible material. Another conductive layer - made out of fine woven wires or thin metallic foils - surrounds the whole cable.

The importance of coaxial cables extends to radio frequency transmission line signals, connection of receivers or radio transmitters with that of their respective antennas and in computer networking systems. It is also very important in cable television signal distribution.

Aside from all these important applications of a bulk wire, there are other uses important in residences and business establishments. A low voltage outdoor lighting is likewise dependent upon such cords or cables.
