Laser eye surgery is a procedure through which it is possible to refocus eye cornea permanently, so that the need to wear glasses or contact lenses is done away with.

As it were, most of the problems that make people have to wear glasses are caused by issues in their corneas; where the cornea is unable to either focus on objects at a short distance from it, or on objects a long distance from it. For many years, the only solution available for this problem was mechanical: through the wearing of glasses - which would refocus the light, to make for proper vision.

For patients who had the will, and resources to seek a non-mechanical solution to the vision problems that were caused by focus issues in the cornea, another solution would be the installation of contact lenses. Of course, this possibility came much later. So it usually boiled down to a choice between wearing glasses or wearing contact lenses.

The problem with vision problem solutions like the wearing of contact lenses or glasses was that they tended not to get to the 'root' of the problem. They were temporary situations, even precarious solutions one would say; so that you had to ensure, for instance, that you had to have your contact lenses changed on time, or you would be in very deep trouble. Similarly, if you opted to go the glasses-way, you had to ensure that you carried your glasses at all times; otherwise you might also end up in very big trouble, vision-wise.

Yet the progression from the situation where the only solution for vision problems available was the wearing of glasses to a situation where slightly more permanent contact lenses became available offered some hope. This was hope that in the fullness of time, it would be possible to develop a truly permanent solution the whole range of vision problems that were initially only treatable through glasses, and which were now being treated with contact lenses. People saw the contact lens as a solution that got closer to the root of the problem than the glasses.

Well, the dreams of the people who hoped for a more permanent solution to the vision problems addressed through glasses (and later contact lenses) have finally come true. For in recent years, it has become possible to get to the root of the problem, and deal with it, through laser eye surgery.

Since laser eye surgery became a possibility, we have seen more and more people opting for, rather than keeping on wearing contact lenses and glasses. There are many reasons for his trend. But in the final analysis, the great appeal of laser eye surgery as a treatment for the whole range of vision problems previously treated through contact lenses and glasses comes from the fact that laser eye surgery offers a more 'permanent' solution to the problem. As we all know, people are eager for permanent solutions to problems, if only for the psychological closure that comes from knowing that the problem won't be rearing its head up again. And as far as this whole range of vision problems go, laser eye treatment in one such 'permanent' solution.
