Some see it as a minor inconvenience, others as a complete and total disaster. Whatever your views may be on this one thing is for sure, it is a problem. You probably haven't figured out what I'm talking about yet (unless you were smart and read the title) so let me tell you. It's the epidemic of the freezing Xbox. Yes, this small thing is sweeping across nations and is quickly putting many into positions of despair as they try to save their stalling consoles.
Luckily there is a cure; a way to fix this grand issue it just takes a little reading. Below you will find ways to stop your Xbox from freezing which should also help you keep your sanity:
1. First off, check the disc. Any smudges, dirt, scratches or anything of any kind on the disc will hinder the consoles ability to read the disc. This will often lead to the Xbox freezing. All you have to do is take a soft cloth and wipe the disc, moving from the center outwards. Don't use liquids such as water or soap or any abrasives as this could permanently damage the disc rendering it useless.
2. If you have recently bought the game and if it always freezes in the same spot then there is probably an error/glitch on the disc. Hopefully you saved your receipt. What you should then do is return the disc to the store and get another copy. If you cannot bring it back to the store, contact the publisher and explain to them your situation. They may be able to help you out.
3. Many people think that their Xbox is a great piece of technology that is very advanced, and for the most part they're right. However the console does have one minor defect...it overheats. If your console is in an environment that makes it heat up quickly then this too could be a reason why your Xbox freezes. Try moving your Xbox to a cooler place such as an open shelf and away from heaters, electronics and other heat sources. Don't place it on a soft surface such as a couch or bed as this could actually make the problem worse by covering some of the vents.
4. Once again as advanced as this piece of hardware is it can become a victim of inconvenient circumstances. Another possibility to this problem is that your Xbox's cache has become corrupted. All this means is that some or even one file in your cache has an error in it. What you then have to do is clean out your cache (this is perfectly safe. It will not delete any save games, demos, videos or anything else you have saved on your Xbox. This will however delete your game automatic updates. After your are through the clean up process these will have to be re-downloaded) To clean the cache follow the below steps:
- Move to the System section of the Xbox Dashboard.
- Select Memory, and then press the A button.
- Highlight a storage device.
- Press the Y button to view the Device Options screen.
- While you view the Device Options screen, enter this sequence of commands on the controller:
- Press the X button
- Press the X button
- Press the left bumper
- Press the right Bumper
- Press the X button
- Press the X button
- After you enter the correct sequence you will receive the following message:
- This will perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices. Do you want to continue? Yes No
- Select Yes, and then press the A button.

5. Just like your cache your hard drive as well can become corrupted. This may sound bad but it's not the end of the world. It can be fixed. Before going through and fixing it though your best bet is to figure out if it actually is corrupted.
While your console is turned off, remove your hard drive and leave it out for a few days. While the HDD is out, play games. If your system doesn't freeze anymore then your HDD is probably corrupted and needs to be formatted.
(Note: before going through with the next step it is recommended that you transfer all your data from your hard drive to a memory unit. Do this then make sure your unit is disconnected once you are ready to format. Formatting erases everything on the HDD so any save games, videos, demos, music, etc will be erased during the process. This cannot be undone).
To format your hard drive simply insert the HDD while the console is off. Start it up then go into the system menu. You will find formatting options there.
Hopefully after following the above steps your Xbox doesn't freeze anymore. If it still does though I don't recommend sending it to Microsoft unless you absolutely have to. You'll be charged 140.00 and that doesn't even guarantee that the problem won't happen again after you get it back. In any way whatever you decide to do don't open the Xbox as this will void your warranty...mind you the warranty is crap anyways so what you do is up to you.
Best of luck
