Cold soldering has so far been reported as the major cause of the Xbox 360 red ring of death. There are lead-free solders located included in the structure of the motherboard and they depend on the correct heat flow for a proper soldering.
With the additional mass of the chips in the game console, this heat flow is impaired which triggers the cracking of the solders because of the temperature variations inside the motherboard. This problem goes hand in hand with the malfunctioning of the cooler that is known to cause the Xbox 360 red ring of death too.
Improvements to prevent the Xbox 360 red ring of death
Due to the large number of complaints in regard to the appearance of the Xbox 360 red ring of death, Microsoft has adopted a number of measures to solve the hardware failure issues right from the design. The use of Falcon motherboards for instance with the Xbox 360 consoles has registered an incredible increase of the reliability over the previous models. Thus, the rates for hardware failure with the Falcon motherboard are not higher than 10%.

This means that you should investigate to see which models enjoyed the highest success on the market, and last but not least not jump to every new launch without getting some reviews on the way it works.
Getting the red ring of death or the three red lights very frequently is not a good sign. You must do something about this problem as soon as possible but unfortunately, the Microsoft warranty is a drag. There are several guides out there that demonstrate a permanent way to fix Xbox 360 3 red lights using basic home equipment.
