Home video game console entertainment has seen much iteration over the past couple of decades. As such, the public has discovered a number of problems with each generation of consoles. The high-definition generation is no different and Microsoft's Red Ring of Death error may be the most famous of all. Determined to be a malfunction from general overheating it is actually caused by a variety of manufacturer defects in simple components of the console. Without a warranty you can still repair the defects that will fix Xbox RROD errors with very little time and effort.
Although overall overheating was the exact cause of the red light error, several small defects caused the overheating. Here's what you do to be sure you've repaired them all. Remove the shell and locate the motherboard. On the underside you will find two X-clamps which cover the heat sink, and then the CPU and GPU. Carefully remove the clamps with a screwdriver and then also take out the heat sink. Clean these components, as well as the processors which you can now see with the heat sink removed. Any debris that manages to get into this area, especially the heat sink, can interfere with the electrical behavior of these parts, which results in the red ring. Apply a thermal compound to the heat sink to restore to its factory state. Replace the sink and the clamps with new screws because the old screws would have been susceptible to heat erosion if they had not already. Fasten them tightly and close the cover and this should solve the problem.
Unfortunately, this does not always resolve the issue, in which case it is likely the graphics chip. You can send your unit to Microsoft who will replace it for you, but it will cost you parts and labor. Because of this you should look into replacing it yourself.
