Station Dock
Dock Teegarden's love of the West spanned nine decades
Born in Boulder in 1919, Dock was a Depression-era kid who grew up exploring the foothills. Although he had friends his own age, he preferred spending time with older people. He said that the old-timers tolerated him, took him hunting and fishing, and made life a lot more interesting.

Living on a sailboat is really a fun way to live or retire. However I have seen many a cruisers day ruined by the outboard motor on his dinghy deciding not to work. This is your means of getting from your anchorage to the shore or dock...when the outboard has an attitude, it can darken the day.

So how much do you have to know about keeping that bad boy up and running...starting on the first pull.

In 8 years of cruising and using the outboard at least once every day. I am convinced, as are the mechanics that I talked to, that 90% of the problems go back to the carburetor and related fuel issues. So concentrate your efforts in this area.

You need to know how to take the carburetor apart and put it back together again. First thing remove the carburetor from the engine and work on it someplace other than afloat on your dinghy...invariably if you do you will lose something. For you cruisers over 50 you know the internal parts of a carburetor are tiny and have a way of escaping. Do it up top or on a table below...caution make sure you put a towel on the table first to keep on good terms with the first mate.

As far as parts go you need a carburetor rebuild kit for your engine.  I would go a step further and have an extra carburetor jet on board. They are so tiny it is almost impossible to tell if they are clean. When you first rebuild your carburetor you will take the existing jet out and clean it as best you can...put it back together...and the engine still won't run. If this has never happened to you are fortunate or less than forthcoming.

A blowout by a high pressure air hose is the best way to clean a clogged jet. If you don't have access to air pressure... soak the jet in solvent overnight. Make it easy on yourself...get an extra jet. Take the clogged jet and get it blown out at the nearest gas station.

The fuel can sometimes be a little dirty, especially in the Caribbean. To alleviate this problem install an inline fuel filter on your gas hose. It is cheap and easy to do. Combined with the fuel filter in the engine you are doing all you can to keep dirty fuel from reaching our friend, the carburetor.

Living on a sailboat is a wonderful lifestyle. Make it easy on yourself and be ready to handle your outboard motor's carburetor. You will be glad you did.
