The Nintendo Wii generally pronounced as "we" is a home video gaming console launched by Nintendo.
The Wii is a seventh generation console which faces competition from Sony's Playstation3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. According to Nintendo, Wii was released keeping in mind a wider target group including people from all age groups as compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3 which target a particular group of gamers, and to most extents the Wii has succeeded in achieving its targets, it leads the generation over PS3 and Xbox 360.
The most distinguishing feature of the Wii is its wireless remote controller known as the Wii remote, which detects three dimensional hand movements and can be used as a pointing device. Another important feature which distinguishes the Wii from other seventh generation consoles is the WiiConect24, which enables it to receive updates and messages from the internet while the console is in standby mode.
The Wii is the successor of Nintendo GameCube and the fifth in the series of gaming consoles produced by Nintendo. The Wii also has the ability to play all GameCube games.
The Wii was first introduced at the 2004 E3 press conference and then unveiled after an year in the 2005 E3 press conference. The prototype of the controller was revealed at the September 2005 Tokyo Game show and at the E3 press conference of 2006 the console bagged in many awards under its name, by December 2008, it was launched globally across all its key markets.
The launch package of the Wii included the console, one stand which enables the console to be placed vertically, one Wii remote, a nunchuk attachment, a clear stabilizer for the stand, sensor bar, removable stand for the sensor bar, two AA sized batteries, audio/video cables, SCART adapter (for European countries), operation documents and copy of the game called Wii sports.
