Over 1 million cars are stolen in the US every year and yours could be one of them if you do not take a few basic precautions. Here are some tips to avoid your car from being stolen:
Whenever you come out of the car, make it a habit to be sure that you lock your car even if you are leaving it for a very short period. Once this habit is ingrained in you, you will find yourself doing it automatically every time you get down on the car. If you still find yourself negligent, try post stickers on the windscreen or on the car door to remind yourself to lock the car.
Never leave the keys in the car ignition when you get out of it. Sounds very basic, but a five of the cars that were stolen had their keys in the ignition; it is like announcing to the thief that the car was there for the stealing.
No need to keep your valuable things like a purse or a lap top or briefcase prominently on the dashboard or at the seat where they can be easily seen. If you do that, you are inviting theft by making your car more tempting for the car thief.
Make sure that the windows in your car are always rolled up before you lock the car. If you have locked the car and left the windows or just one window down, the car can easily be opened, by unlocking it after reaching in, making your car at risk.
Do not park your car at an isolated spot in a parking lot. Park it where there is plenty of light so that your car can be seen from afar, and the chances that your car could get stolen are minimized. If you have a garage, park the car in it, and do not leave it out front on the driveway or street. After all that, what is the purpose of the garages for, aren't they?
When you buy a new car make sure that it has an anti theft device as part of its accessories. Install a steering lock in addition and you should always use it when you park your car. This can be a deterrent to anyone who has a design of your car. To prevent anyone from towing away your car even when it is locked, set the emergency brakes and be sure that the wheels are turned towards the curb. This will make it difficult for anyone to take the car out by towing it.
There are tracking devices available that can track your car if it is stolen. These are devices that can allow the car to be tracked by satellite and can help the police if your car is stolen. A car with a tracking device has a lower insurance premium.
If your car is one of the very popular models, there is a greater chance that it can be stolen and the parts can be resold. You should consider this when you buy a new car and look for a car that's not that well known.
You will find that it is not difficult to prevent your car from being stolen. The anti-theft devices or tracking devices may cost you some money, but definitely not as much as you may lose if your car is stolen. And the other pieces of advice don't cost anything if just use of your common sense.
