While the subject of karaoke elicits a roll of the eyes for many people, there's no doubt that karaoke has had a huge cultural impact, first in Japan and then around the world. For a myriad of reasons, people enjoy singing and performing, and there's no device that's more successfully leveled the playing field for public performances than the karaoke machine.

Traditional karaoke machines incorporate a microphone, a recording of the instrumental tracks of a song, an audio output device, and a video screen that displays the lyrics of a song. Singers (or those who consider themselves to be singers) use the microphone to sing along to the music while following the lyrics on a video screen. Karaoke singing gained popularity in Japan in the 1980s and then spread throughout the world in the 1990s. Typically, people would gather in bars or clubs for "Karaoke Night," although some clubs featured karaoke every night of the week.

In the new millennium, karaoke machines got much more personal. Singles and families started buying home karaoke machines for their own enjoyment, as well as for entertainment at parties. It was easy to simply hook them up to the television, put a disc in the DVD player, and have a blast. Karaoke continued to evolve when "Karaoke Revolution" was released for the PlayStation 2 gaming console. The player used a USB microphone or headset to sing along and received a score based on his or her performance. Subsequently, several more versions were released, including a "Party Bundle" for the PlayStation2, Nintendo GameCube, and Xbox. The latest offering in the franchise, "Karaoke Revolution: American Idol," built on the smashing success of the TV series, "American Idol." In this version, up to eight people can compete in duets, in teams, or as single players.

There's no doubt that "American Idol" has been a factor in the continuing popularity of karaoke. The premise that almost anyone has what it takes to become America's next singing sensation (and that, even if you don't, you can still get sympathy votes) has aficionados singing their hearts out - whether at home or in public.

The television series has also brought about the next evolutionary step in karaoke - turning MP3 players and MP3 downloads into hot gadgets that are perfect handheld karaoke machines. These specialized MP3 players allow aspiring "American Idol" contestants - and anyone else who enjoys singing out loud - to buy and download any song, input the lyrics, then remove the vocal track and record their own voices over the music while reading a display of the lyrics. The internal speaker and microphone, as well as the display screen, make recording and playing karaoke-style songs a breeze. That's probably why this type of MP3 player is touted as the most widely used, pocket-sized karaoke player.

These types of hot gadgets, the continuing success of "American Idol," and the spawning of similar television shows like "The Singing Bee" and "Don't Forget the Lyrics!" all prove that karaoke is alive, well, and evolving to new heights.

The HDX 1000 Network Media Tank offers both hard wired streaming network support and wireless network support (TP-LINK TL-WN821N Wireless N USB Adapter) is available as an add on for around $20 USD. The HDX 1000 gives you the ability not only play media files from your computer or external hard drive, but this digital media player also supports streaming internet video from sources such as Youtube, Veoh, and Google Video. The main purpose of Noise cancelling earphones is to reduce the undesired ambient or acoustic sounds through the ANC or active noise control method. The circuitry uses the earphones electronic signal to produce anti-noise signals. This results in a sort of destructive interference which results in the cancelling of the ambient noise which is heard in an earphone. These earphones can be very needy for a passenger who wants to sleep in noisy vehicles such as subway cars or airplanes. It also helps the people who want to enjoy the music from their iPods or phones without feeling the need to raise excess volume.

The ANC (active noise control) method used by noise cancelling earphones cancels the lower-frequency segment of the noise and higher frequency noises are prevented by the soundproofing techniques. The ANC method does not affect the high frequencies much and soundproofing reduces the need of complicated circuitry. These work very well when the user is alongside a continuously humming refrigerator or the cabin of an airplane but their effectiveness can be reduced during quickly changing audio frequencies such as speeches. Earlier, these noise cancellation qualities used to come in headphones only which would help airline passengers or helicopter pilots while flying. But these used to involve lots of circuitry which would increase the size and weight of the headphones.

Many headphones consumed power supplied by batteries which had to be occasionally either recharged or replaced. Also, the quality of noise cancellation decreased with the decrease in the battery life. Earlier models also used to produce additional noises such as hisses which would disrupt the listening experience and sometimes also damage the ear drums if they were too sensitive. The new models of headphones incorporate battery in their existing space but this does not reduce the weight of the headphones. This problem is solved by using earphones which support the noise cancelling features.

Leading earphone (and other audio devices) manufacturers are now producing earphones which have the ANC (active noise control) feature embedded with the help of microphones. These microphones do not take up any additional space and are a part of the circuits main body itself. These earphones take power from the mp3 players or mobiles they are attached along with and many companies produce noise cancellation earphones that are self-powered and do not require any compatible phones or players to work with. Most manufacturers offer the user both noise cancellation headphones as well as noise cancelling earphones. The headphones provide around the ear coverage and can be used for desktop use. The earphones can be used for cancelling unwanted noises while traveling.

Many earphones come with added noise cancellation switches which can be adjusted according to the users wish. They do increase the bulk of the earphone but offer the owner a choice to use them only when they are desired. Some earphones have a drawback against many ANC featured headphones which can also provide bass support. But, this disadvantage is removed by modern earphones which are more costly but provide quality bass in addition to noise cancellation.

Noise reduction headsets are an amazing new technology that have really just reached mainstream levels in the last few years. The Bose company was one of the first to popularize the use of these headphones and who had a product that worked exceptionally well.

In the recent past many other manufacturers have come out with competing products and now you can easily find noise reduction headphones and headsets in a wide price range. As the market has expanded, the price has come down and the quality of many products has decidedly improved.

Being able to wear a headset and have the background noise nearly completely disappear is an exceptional experience. The idea behind noise canceling technology is that your headset has a tiny microphone included that monitors the ambient noise that surrounds you. The included circuitry then immediately reverses the wave of the bothersome outside noise and play back a canceling wave that reduces or does a very good job of highly eliminating the background noise.

While your mileage may vary, you will find that the various models all do a good job in some areas while they may not meet your expectations in others. Headsets that totally cover your ears and provide an additional physical barrier to noise may do a better job than those that rely only on the noise canceling technology to work.

Most models offer the option of being able to plug in your laptop or MP3 player or use them on a planes audio system so that you both get the reduction of background noise and can listen to music or other audio at the same time. However, the headset can be used on their own to just supply reduction in the background noise in loud or noisy situations.

An additional branch that the technology is taking is in making 'comfortable' headphones that can be worn while sleeping. These are made of soft material and would be an ideal for a long plane ride and a long nap at the same time. These sleep headphones often are used by those who listen to subliminal or sleep music and want headphones that are extremely comfortable.

Since the headsets use active electronics to create the noise cancelling effect, they all need a power source. This is usually a triple A battery but models are available with many different options. They are also packaged with various options to allow connection to different audio sources.

You will want to consider trying noise reduction headsets if you frequently fly or travel long distances or if you are exposed to work or other situations with high levels of background noise. The difference between a pleasant quiet experience and the noisy irritating times of the past will quickly convince you how effective and essential this technology is.
