LCD monitors are not the same size as CRT monitors. LCD monitors are actually larger for the same sized CRT monitor! Monitor measurements are measured diagonally. Since the advent of the television, this has been the industry standard for screen measurements. When computer monitors hit the scene, the measurement became the diagonal measurement of the tube itself, not the actual viewable screen. When you look at your monitor, there is a plastic box that houses your CRT tube and other components, but when you look at the front of your monitor, there is probably an inch or more of framework around your picture tube. This hides the rest of the CRT tube that is enclosed within the box.

Now take a ruler or tape measure, and measure the actual image you are viewing, measure diagonally, and you will see that the actual measurement is smaller than the monitors claimed size. For example, my 19 inch CRT monitor, measuring the actual image from the bottom left hand corner of the picture to the upper right hand corner is actually 17.25 inches, or in other words, only .25 inches larger than 17 inches, if the monitor measurement were the actual viewing screen this 19 inch monitor would only qualify as a 17 inch LCD monitor. This is where the LCD measurement comes in.

LCD monitors are measured by actual viewable area of the screen. They do not have a large rounded out tube beyond the screen, it is a flat panel of Liquid Crystals behind which are a series of tube lights that shine through the color crystals to illuminate your display. A 17 inch LCD monitor is 17 inches diagonally, a 19 inch monitor is 19 inches diagonal or about 1.75 inches larger than my example of the CRT tube.

Another little known glich in monitor measurements is how the diagonal measurement of a widescreen monitor reduces the overall height of the monitor which in turn reduces the actual size of a standard 4:3 to a smaller size. Example: If you purchase a 32 inch widescreen TV and watch a standard broadcast movie in it's original format, you in essence are watching a 26 inch television. The JVC Dynapix LT-26DE1BJ DVR television offers great picture quality on a well-designed set and up to 160GB of memory for recording your favourite shows. Measuring 660mm x 489mm x 279mm, this HDD TV has 1366 pixels x 768 pixels display resolution and a 26" screen.

This is a guide to show you how to remove a laptop LCD screen on a Compaq Presario. For tools we will only need 2 tools: a phillips head screw driver and also a sharp/pointy knife.

1. We will first lift up the lcd screen so that the notebook is in an open state. Look for 6 rubber casings very small circles. They cover 6 screws that we need to remove on the frame of the lcd screen. Use our pointy knife to lift these rubber coverings up. Put them off to the side in a safe place.
2. Take our phillips screw driver and make sure it is small enough to fit in the 6 holes. Remove the 6 screws and put them with the rubber coverings we removed in the last step.
3. Lets take off the outer frame that was being held on by those 6 screws. Be very cautious not to go ripping at the frame, and just take it off gently and do it little by little all the way around. When it starts to feel loose you know you are doing it right.
4. Now that the frame is off we need to identify a few things. Start with the 2 hinges at the base of the laptop lcd screen that we are going to remove. Next look at the left hinge there is group of wires 1 inch thick, that is the video cable that plugs into the motherboard. To the right of that is 2 wires together, that is the inverter wires. The inverter wires run right to left along the base of the LCD screen.
5. Next lets free the LCD screen from the back cover, since the front frame is removed just do the back now. 2 screws secure it to the notebook screen. These 2 screws are on the sides and towards the top. Fold the lcd screen down towards the keyboard a little and begin unscrewing those 2 screws, to free it from the back cover.
6. Detach the cables we talked about before now, the video cable and the inverter cable. They are attached to the actual motherboard of the Compaq Presario motherboard. The video cable might have a little bit of tape holding it down, remove that, then unplug it from its connection. The inverter cables will be easier to detach here.

Recently TV’s have got wider and thinner and some would even say… ‘sexier’, but have they got any better?

Sure, the latest trend is HDTV (High Definition TeleVision), promising stunning picture quality, but at a much higher price than regular CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Televisions.

Buzz words like plasma, rear projection and LCD will roll off the salesmanÂ’s tongue as you walk into your local electrical store, before being asked to choose from a variety of screen sizes, shapes and brands. It's enough to make you give up before you even start looking!

So Do I need a HDTV for my PS3 ?

PlayStation 3 comes with a cable that will let you use a regular television, so you don’t ‘need’ one, but be prepared to be very disappointed with the picture quality.

The PS3 isnÂ’t cheap, whereas the PS2 is, so just be sure you are happy that you will hardly be able to see any difference between the games on either system on an old fashioned TV.

The biggest problem for those people who were among the first to buy a HDTV was that there was almost nothing to watch on it that showed off the very high detail levels that can be produced by these TVÂ’s. Normal television channels can look even worse on a high definition television because they emphasize every tiny imperfection. Digital TV looks better, but again can look terrible when you are watching fast moving or very detailed scenes. Ideally, you will need to subscribe to a range of dedicated high definition channels.

So it all sounds negative at this point, and until the launch of the Sony PS3, it was.

Now things are different. All of the PS3 games are high definition, pushing your HDTV to produce amazing details, sharp images and a range of colours not even possible on your home computer monitor.

A recent PS3 firmware update now upscales regular DVDÂ’s and makes them look amazing when played on a HDTV.

The PlayStation3 has a BluRay player built into it. Blu Ray movies are now coming down in price, and there is now a huge selection of movies to choose from; all recorded in high definition. Personally I would recommend that you rent Blu-Ray for now, until their price falls a little more.

The PS3 also allows you to surf the internet, which is a completely new experience on a 32 inch screen sitting in on a comfy chair. Many HDTV will allow you to split the screen, allowing others to watch TV while you surf the net.

So the choice is now more difficult.

If you are happy with a small screen and donÂ’t need TV channels, then the alternative is to hook your PS3 up to a computer monitor. You will need a special cable, and a monitor with a digital input, but this will work fine. If your monitor doesnÂ’t have speakers, then you will need to buy some.

If you want a screen larger than 22 inches, then definitely get a HTDV, but make sure it has at least one HDMI connector on the back and has a resolution of 1080i or 1080p and a screen refresh rate of 8ms or less.
