The first game helped the Wii conquer the world, laying waste to light fittings on every continent and giving birth to the Wiimote's jacket. This beach-themed follow-up is hoping to do the same thing for the Wii Motion Plus, which will come bundled with the game later this year.

So, our first experience of this new level of control? Throwing a Frisbee for a dog. It's cute but possibly not the best demonstration of what the new peripheral is capable of. Archery, by far the most complex of the games, primarily made use of the Nunchuck by aiming at the target with your Wiimote and pulling the Nunchuck back towards your body (simulating the draw of your snare) and letting go of the 'Z' button to release the arrow. No need for the Wii Motion Plus there.

Power cruising, wakeboarding, canoeing, air sports action, table tennis, basketball, golf, bowling and cycling, keeping with the resort theme, all play well with you in-acting the real thing, but still questions the necessity of the Wii Motion Plus. Revert back to last year's E3, where a live demo of sword fights took place between Cammy and The Reginator, including some weird wood chopping game; rings a bell...

Swordplay and Speed Slice, the correct terms for these two games, looks lame from an outsider's point of view, as players are required to slice and chop thin air like an idiot. But much like tennis in the original title, Swordplay is definitely the flagship activity. It's immense fun and is the only game to truly make use of the new technology - the 'Tennis' of Wii Sports Resort. The Wii Motion Plus transmits your exact movement to the sensor at a 1:1 ratio. Chopping from a left to right and up and down motion or entering from random angles all worked with unheard-of precision. It's the StarWars experience all fans have been waiting for... minus a Death Star and plus a beach.

Not the best demonstration of the Wii Motion Plus, but we won't bet against Nintendo just yet.

Wii Sports was a deserving hit with gamers of all ages, but it didn't provide long-lasting entertainment once you had sampled all the mini-games. Hopefully Nintendo will resort to something a bit beefier this time round.
