Should I be concerned about hardening of the arteries to the brain at age 55?
Recent MRI has shown hardening of the arteries to the brain; however, am being told that it is normal aging procedure. This has not satisfied me in regards to my health. I would like more information, natural ways of resisting this, anything that could be offered for me to be more knowledgeable in dealing with this new diagnosis.
Recent studies have shown that reducing cholesterol to ultra-low levels with statin drugs can begin to reverse hardening of the arteries.
Other than that, do not smoke, make sure your blood pressure is under control and keep your cholesterol down via statins.
If diabetic, keep that under control also.

Figuring out how to concentrate and retain memory as we age doesn't have to be a difficult problem to tackle. Much of what we've learned about the brain and aging in recent years has shed some new light on this old problem. Some surprising solutions have come from those discoveries.
We probably all know someone (or perhaps are that someone) who has problems remembering things and finds they can't concentrate as they get older. It is not uncommon. We also probably think that to a certain extent it is also inevitable...just a part of aging. However, science is finding that this may not necessarily be just a by-product of getting older, but may have other root causes....causes that are actually in our control.
One of the causes of why people can't concentrate and retain memory function as they age is due to a decrease in blood flow to the brain. The brain uses more oxygen than any other organ so any reduction in blood flow "starves" the brain of oxygen and decreases its ability to function properly.
If we want to look at how to concentrate and protect memory as we age then we need to look at how we eat. Taking steps now to reduce "bad fats" and increase "good fats" as well as increasing nutrients that help remove bad fat from our bodies will help ensure clean arteries and good blood flow as we age.
Using herbs like Ginkgo Biloba which helps increase cerebral blood flow may also help answer this question of how to concentrate and remember as we age. Many studies have been done on Ginkgo and have supported its effect on helping the brain function better.
Studies are also suggesting that those who can't concentrate and remember due to age related decline, Alzheimer's or dementia may have damage to brain cells caused by free radicals. They are finding that those who have diets high in antioxidants which protect against free radicals seem to have less issues with these types of brain disorders. While not the only reason for these diseases, it may be a huge factor in them. Again, this is something that we control right now by how we eat.
Figuring out how to concentrate and remain sharp as we age may also be related to how we exercise our brains. Just as our bodies require exercise to remain healthy and fight off aging so do our brains. Scientists who have studied aging and its effect on the brain have noted that those who retain function into their later years tend to be those who also actively work their brains.
They found that people who pushed their brains by doing crosswords, brain teasers or other puzzles as well as those who frequently took on learning new skills or hobbies tended to keep their mental abilities longer than those who were less active mentally. The point was that people need to push their minds beyond the ordinary routine. You need to make your brain work at recall and critical thinking in order to strengthen those functions. This allows those functions to stay stronger longer.
Using herbal supplements in addition to Ginkgo may also be an effective tool in dealing with the puzzle of how to concentrate as we get older. For example, supplements using Siberian Ginseng and Gotu Kola also showed an impact on recall and mental functioning in recent studies. The key to protecting our minds may be in making good use of the natural substances found in some of these plants. The more scientists study them the more they are embracing them as a viable way of helping delay age related decline. With all these tools at our disposal we have more control of the aging process than many have realized. The point is that the sooner we start doing something the better off our brains will be.
